this is your brain....

As science, medicine, and technology continue to advance on a daily basis, the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) has now given way to fMRI, or Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, which measures blood flow and reveals some additional things about our response to different stimuli. The brain has been a particular area of interest with this newer technology, and one of the studies was reported to have actually compared a believer's response to God to a techie's response to getting a new piece of technology. The fMRI results for these two events looked very similar. Now this news was disturbing to some people who have heard about this study, but regardless of the legitimacy of this report, I think it speaks to a bigger concept.
We ARE designed to worship. It may be money, another person, a lifestyle, or an almost unlimited number of other things, but make no mistake...we WILL worship. God designed us to worship Him, but it seems that for most of us, if not all of us, something is continually trying to grab the BIG SEAT (see Brian's post from yesterday at MinistryEquip) and take the center of attention in our lives away from God Himself.
As we walk through our daily lives, it isn't hard to see this concept playing out over and over. After all, our very lives should be about worship and response to God, but I can honestly say I have some miles to travel still in that area. But even more concerning is the corporate expression of this thing we call "worship". Next week, we'll tackle the matter of corporate worship head on...when does the corporate response to God end and the BIG SHOW begin?
